Sanguinarinum, derived from Sanguinarin (C₁₉H₁₇NO₄), is a pearly white plant alkaloid prepared through trituration or as a solution in vinegar. In homoeopathy, it is known for its powerful action on the respiratory system—especially in acute inflammatory conditions involving the larynx and throat. This medicine is particularly useful in serious croupy conditions with fibrinous exudation, great difficulty breathing, and alarming symptoms of airway obstruction. Acting both as an expectorant and anti-inflammatory, Sanguinarinum has shown dramatic results in pseudo-membranous croup and related respiratory crises in children.
