Amygdalus amara, also known as Bitter Almond, is a powerful medicine derived from Amygdalus communis of the Rosaceæ family. The medicine is prepared by distillation, during which Hydrocyanic acid is formed through the interaction of water and the plant's amygdaloids. It acts deeply upon the nervous system, respiratory system, and digestive tract, producing effects similar to Hydrocyanic acid. Characterized by respiratory spasms, convulsions, urticaria, and a cold, clammy state, this medicine is especially suited to sudden and intense conditions such as asphyxia, epilepsy, syncope, and coma.

Common Name: Bitter Almond

SBL’s Amygdalus amara can be helpful in the following conditions:

Respiratory Constriction and Convulsive Breathing

  • Marked spasmodic breathing, with short, convulsive inspirations and an overwhelming fear of suffocation.
  • Useful in asthmatic states, diphtheric constriction, and laryngo-pharyngeal burning with inability to swallow.
  • Indicated in cough with soreness of the chest, pain extending down to the stomach, and deep stitches under the left nipple that make exhalation difficult.

Coma, Convulsions, and Nervous Spasms

  • Beneficial in epilepsy, tetanus, and opisthotonos.
  • Associated with jerking, hesitating speech, as in stammered phrases: “What’s—the mat—matter with me?”
  • Suitable in syncope, coma, and collapse states marked by surface coldness, clamminess, and pallor or cyanosis.

Swallowing Difficulty and Throat Symptoms

  • Characterized by burning heat in the laryngo-pharynx, and dark red discoloration of the palate and fauces.
  • Swallowing is impossible due to intense irritation or spasmodic restriction.
  • Lancinating pain through the tonsils, making the medicine especially relevant in toxic or inflammatory throat conditions.

Digestive Distress and Vomiting

  • Indicated in vomiting of undigested food and bile, especially in acute neurological or toxic states.
  • Amygdalæ amara suited to gastric disturbance secondary to nervous system overload.

Neurological and Head Symptoms

  • Noted for dullness of the left half of the head.
  • Heaviness in the forehead, and head drawn backward, especially in convulsive states.
  • Eyes appear excessively brilliant, but lack mental responsiveness.

Skin Reactions and Urticaria

  • Beneficial in cases of urticaria arising suddenly, especially with cold, clammy surface and signs of systemic collapse.
